This last week at Brownies, the girl's learned all about Fire Safety by having our neighborhood fire fighters come in a give a short presentation. One of them put on his full uniform including oxygen mask and search-light and crawled into the room on his hands and knees breathing like Darth Vader. I thought the girls were going to wet themselves! Especially when one of the other men turned off the lights. I quickly went over and sat next to Beth and I'm proud to say she handled herself very gracefully. I actually thought this was a great demonstration to show the kids that this is what the firemen are going to look and sound like when/if they ever have to come into a burning house to rescue them. Once the lights were turned back on, the girls got to ask all kinds of questions about the suit, touch it, and alleviate their fears before a situation arises where they would end up hiding from a fireman during an actual fire because they were simply afraid of them in the uniform. It may have been scary, but the alternative is unthinkable! After the demonstration they were able to go outside and see the big ladder truck and even go through the backseat from one side to the other. She thought that was cool! Something Jake hasn't done in Cub Scouts yet! Plus they posed for pictures. Like my husband always says, those Firemen get all the glory!
